Preventative Care
A dental cleaning involves the removal of plaque and tartar deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. If plaque or tartar is left on the teeth it provides the right conditions for bacteria to thrive. The bacteria cause infection of the gums and they start to bleed more easily. If the plaque is not removed then the inflammation will work its way towards the foundations of the tooth causing a “periodontal pocket.” This pocket of bacteria will then colonize and destroy the bone that supports the teeth and loss of gum tissue. The purpose of cleaning and polishing is to leave the tooth surface clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to adhere to them. With proper home care and regular dental cleanings gum disease can be prevented.
Personal home care in an important role in keeping a beautiful and healthy smile. Home care involves proper eating habits and properly using dental aids to control the levels of plaque and bacteria that causes dental disease.
Tooth brushing should be performed a minimum or twice a day with a soft bristle tooth brush. An electric toothbrush such as a Sonicare is a better form of a toothbrush. Flossing daily is equally as important as brushing and can have a significant impact on the overall health of your teeth and gums. Flossing prevents buildup of tartar and food between the teeth and disrupts colonizing bacteria from adhering to teeth.
